We established the Kahu shelter in January, 2023 after helping other local Cairo rescues for the preceding seven years by supplying food, medicine and relocation of dogs and cats. Kahu is a Hawaiian word meaning protector or guardian.

Our shelter is about 12 miles from the Nile River and 15 miles from Giza, the home of the Pyramids. The property we rent is on approximately 5 acres of land and we are currently able to house 290 dogs. The property is walled and staffed by 7 employees.

We also domicile and care for 80 cats in Hellopolis, a neighborhood of Cairo. This location is staffed by Shireen Nassar and on employee.

Many of the dogs we care for are dropped off at our gates in the middle of the night. We also send out driver, Ayman, out to search for dogs that have been abandoned, injured or otherwise vulnerable. Ayman takes them to veterinarians for their medical needs when necessary and he picks up supplies for the shelter. We strive to provide a safe and stress-free life for all of the animals. We welcome them, feed them, and do the best we can to meet to their medical needs.

What Drives Us

Our Mission

Is to protect stray or abandoned dogs and cats at our shelter
We are committed to spaying and neutering all the dogs and cats we shelter in an effort to reduce the overpopulation of dogs and cats in Egypt. Our shelter dogs are fed twice a day. In the morning they receive a diet of chicken, bread and vegetables. In the afternoon they are fed dry dog food. Approximately 80 percent of our cats are fed dry food while the other 20 percent get wet food due to their health problems.
